Pickleball courts open in Chico

The Chico community now has a place to play a fast growing sport with a very unusual name.

The Chico Area Recreation and Park District opened several new pickleball courts Thursday at the 20th Street Community Park.

Pickleball is a growing sport for two or four players which shares features of other racquet-based games including a net and rules similar to tennis, with a few modifications.

Players use solid wood paddles to hit a wiffle-type ball over a net. The game involves less physical exertion than tennis so it is a popular activity with seniors, but is also fun for young people who want to play a fast-paced game that helps hone hand-eye coordination.

Until the opening of the Chico courts Thursday, the only place to play pickleball locally was in Durham.
