A car that just happened to be passing underneath him may have saved the life of a San Francisco window-washer who fell 11 stories.

The still-unidentified window washer fell more than 100 feet Friday in downtown San Francisco. He landed on a slow-moving Toyota Camry. The man was reported in critical but stable condition after his fall. Neither San Francisco General Hospital nor San Francisco police provided an update to his condition over the weekend.

San Francisco broadcaster KCBS asked physics professor Paul Doherty how an 11-story fall could be survivable. Doherty says the fact that the man landed on a car that could crumble likely had a lot to do with it ( ). Doherty compared it to movie stunt workers who land on piles of cardboard or mattresses.
