MANILA, Philippines (AP) - Officials in the Philippines say the death toll from a powerful typhoon two weeks ago is now past 5,000, and they expect it to go higher.

Philippine government officials say the bodies of 5,209 people have been counted in the central and southern Philippines.

The interior secretary says the situation is stabilizing, with major roads cleared of debris and some banks, stores and gas stations doing business again.
