Peterson pleads not guilty, bail set at $3 million in Clover Fire case

Zane Wallace Peterson entered a plea of not guilty to 71 charges, including one charge of murder, in a Shasta County Superior Courtroom this afternoon. The judge set his bail at $3 million.

Peterson was arrested in his Happy Valley home yesterday morning on suspicion of setting several fires in Shasta County, including September’s Clover Fire which burned over 8,000 acres, destroyed 68 homes and killed 56-year-old Brian Stanley Henry of Igo.

The 29-year-old was arrested yesterday by CAL FIRE law enforcement official on 140 counts of arson of a structure or vegetation, one count of arson causing bodily injury, 60 counts of arson to occupied structures, two counts of arson with aggravating factors and five counts of arson using incendiary device.

The judge today estimated the total cost of the fire at $65 million.

Peterson was formerly an employee with the Forestry Service. He was appointed a public defender and his next court date is scheduled for January 2, 2014.
