Part of a business is destroyed and a motorhome is completely lost after a fire on the Skyway in Paradise Sunday night.
But as people went through the rubble Monday morning, a new set of problems arose.
The owner of the motel-turned-apartment complex where the fire started said her property has been taken over by drug addicts who aren’t paying rent. She claims to have contacted Paradise Police several times but that they haven’t helped.
“Everything that I’ve had to put up with through the years like no help from the police,” said Rose Kallunki, owner of the Skyway Lodge Motel. “It’s heartbreaking.”
The fire spread from the motorhome to the neighboring countertop business.
“Not only did my father loss his shop, I lost everything,” said Tracy Brice, whose family owns Paradise Countertops.
Brice said the apartment complex has been a problem for years and this fire was the final straw. Now, she wants it gone.
“I think they need to level that pink motel and get it out of here,” she said. “The people in it need to get help.”
Paradise Police said they have responded to several incidents at the apartment complex but can’t handle the failure to pay rent because that is a civil matter.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
