A huge "Celebration of Chico" takes place in Downtown Chico Saturday ... with several popular community events joining forces for one huge day of fun.
It kicks off at 1 p.m. with the "You Know You're from Chico..." Festival at City Plaza. It's a free event with local bands playing until 5 p.m. and 40 local vendors that include food trucks and arts and crafts. Some of the bands on tap to perform include Charlie Robinson, Cottonwood, Black Slax, the Blue Merles and Quasimofos.
This is the 5th year for the event, which sprang from the "You Know You're from Chico When..." Facebook page, which is now 12,000 members strong. Also part of the festivities are the "Official Chico Icon" awards. Past recipients include "Flo", Marge the Meter Maid, Roundhouse Ronnie the Clown, Linda Watkins-Bennett, Bernie Vigilon, Bob Malowney, and several others.
The Chico Parade of Lights is at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Downtown Chico. This is its 26th year, and it will feature more entries and more lighted floats than ever. The theme is "At the Movies". Pre-parade events begin at 5 p.m. on the streets surrounding the Plaza. They include the Chico Palio Horse Races, which start in front of the Senator Theater. There will also be Trike Races, Bed Races, Wheelchair Rugby and a Car Show.
It's all happening rain or shine. And it's all free. For more information visit www.chicoparadeoflights.com.
