Oroville Police Officers arrested a man that they believe stole the bicycle of a child then tried to sell it online.

The victim reported that her son’s bicycle was stolen April 24 from the Boulder Creek apartment complex in Oroville. The owner of the bicycle parent had the serial number for the bike and was able to provide it to the police.

About a week later the parent located a bike for sale on Craigslist which was similar to her son’s bike. Oroville Police was notified and a meeting was set to buy the bike. The victim was able to confirm at least some parts on the bike were his but the frame was a different color.

Officers attempted to contact the person selling the bike, who immediately fled on the bike. After a brief pursuit Officers were able to arrest and identify the suspect as Justin Rifanburg, 26 of Oroville. The bike had been painted but was identified by the matching serial number.

Rifanburg was arrested for Possession of Stolen Property, Resisting Officers, and an unrelated Felony Warrant out of the Butte County Sheriff’s Department.

Oroville Police said it’s crucial that records or photograph the serial numbers of property such as bicycles because doing so greatly increases the chances of stolen property being returned to their owners.
