Officials have released body camera footage showing the moment an Oroville police officer shot a man on the Fourth of July.
Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said during a press conference Wednesday that the officer who shot 37-year-old Jeremy Hunter in the early morning hours July 4 was justified in doing so.
Authorities say Hunter got out of his car and pulled a loaded gun from his waistband. Officer John Nickelson fired his gun at Hunter, striking him in the upper body several times. Hunter survived the shooting, but was left paralyzed from the waist down.
During the shooting Nickelson fired five rounds, one of which struck fellow officer Shane Carpenter in the hand. Carpenter lost the ring finger on his hand, but is expected to be able to return to duty full time.
