A Butte County Jury has found Olabaku Jones guilty of second-degree murder in the death of his 33-year-old girlfriend Mary Abby Tucker.
Jones was charged with murder for beating his pregnant girlfriend to death last June at their Spencer Avenue home in Oroville. When he was questioned by investigators Jones told them Tucker had slipped and fallen in the shower.
During the trial Jones defense attorney only called one witness to the scene, and it took the jury less than three hours to return the guilty verdict.
Following the return of the guilty verdict, the jury redeliberated in order to determine how Jones' previous convictions will impact his sentancing. They determined that one of his prior convictions will be worth five years and the other four worth one year each, but one of those is a strike making 15 to life now 30 to life.
What the sentancing decision means is that Jones now faces 39 years to life in prison when he is sentenced on August 20 at 9:30 a.m.
