The Oroville Police arrested 67-year-old Edward Sylva after he was accused of trying to lure children into his van at USA Park in Oroville.

Oroville Police were called yesterday at approximately 12:30 p.m. regarding a male subject who reportedly asked a child to enter his van in the parking lot of USA Park also near the Oroville Little League Fields. The license plate and a photograph of the vehicle was obtained by witnesses in the area which led Officers to Sylva.

During the investigation officers learned a 4-year-old girl was at the park on Friday with her family when she was contacted by Sylva. He asked her if she wanted to enter his van and go to the bathroom. The girl started to scream and told her mother. Police were not notified and the family relocated to Hewitt Park. The 4-year-old’s mother then noticed Sylva was driving around the Hewitt park parking lot a short time later. The 4-year-old and her family returned to USA Park yesterday and again observed Sylva and his vehicle. The victim’s mother notified other people at the park and baseball field of what happened and that led to citizens confronting Sylva and the Oroville Police being notified.

The investigation is on-going and officers are attempting to identify and interview additional witnesses and possible victims. Sylva is known to frequent local baseball fields where he goes to hit softballs.

Sylva was charged with attempted lewd acts with a child, and annoying and harassing a child under the age of 18. He is currently being held in the Butte County Jail.
