An Oroville couple accused of causing the death of an elderly woman due to lack of care were arraigned in a Butte County Courtroom Thursday morning.

Gavin Schorovsky, 42, is facing one count of elder abuse causing death and Sandy Schorovsky is facing one count of second degree murder in the death of Gavin's mother Deanna.

According to the sheriff's office, the lack of care 68-year-old Deanna received directly contributed to her death.

Feather River Hospital medical staff called the sheriff's office on July 17, 2013 to report that Deanna Schorovsky, who had been recently admitted, was severely malnourished. She had several wounds that were in various stages of decomposition and part of her spine was exposed.

Deanna died on July 31, 2013 and an autopsy determined her death was directly related to a lack of care.

In the year and a half following Deanna's death, sheriff's investigators consulted with medical professionals and secured an arrest warrant for Gavin and Sandy Schorovsky.

The couple will be back in court for a preliminary hearing on May 12.
