Orland’s K9 “Ruger” received some new attire this holiday season. No, it was not an ugly sweater. It was a new ballistic/stab vest.
Money for the vest was raised on August 24, 2013 in a fundraiser hosted by Vested Interest in K9s in Modesto. Vested Interest in K9s is a 501c (3) volunteers charity located in Massachusetts with the aim of assisting law enforcement agencies in purchasing this potentially life-saving body armor for their K9 units. The organization has provided over 435 K9s with protective vests since their inception in August 2009 resulting in over $400,000 in vests donated in 36 states, according to the Orland Police Department.
The event in August raised over $3,200 and raised enough funds for vests for the Ceres Police Department and one for “Ruger” for the Orland Police Department. Each vest costs roughly 950.00 and has a five year warranty.
New K9 graduates as well as K9's with expired vests are eligible to apply for the ballistic vests.
