SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) - Orange County sheriff's officials are searching for a department assault rifle lost by a deputy who placed the weapon on the trunk of his patrol car, then drove away without putting it back inside.

Lt. Jeff Hallock says teams including bloodhounds have been searching for the AR-15 since the deputy noticed it was gone around 3:15 a.m. Wednesday.

Deputies have been retracing the streets the deputy traversed during his shift in and around Aliso Viejo, where he is assigned.

Hallock says the AR-15 was in its case and was lost sometime after 7 p.m. Tuesday.
