CENTENNIAL, Colo. (AP) - Defense lawyers plan to argue that James Holmes was insane when he opened fire in a suburban Denver movie theater, killing 12 people and wounding 70 others. Holmes' trial begins today with opening statements.

Unlike most other states, Colorado puts the burden on prosecutors in insanity cases.

They must convince jurors beyond a reasonable doubt that Holmes was sane.
