IRWINDALE, Calif. (AP) - The sights and sounds of high-performance cars racing around an oval track at Irwindale Speedway may soon be replaced by the sights and sounds of minivans searching for parking spaces.
The Irwindale City Council voted unanimously Wednesday to rezone the speedway 20 miles east of Los Angeles to allow for construction of an outlet mall.
Irwindale's community development director, Gus Romo, says the next step is for developers to obtain demolition permits and submit a final building plan.
Developers propose an outdoor mall with an entertainment stage and dining court.
Irwindale officials say the facility should bring more jobs and revenue to the city of about 1,400 people.
The speedway, once in an outlying area of Southern California, is the latest motor sports venue to fall victim to encroaching development.
