California Highway Patrol officials are investigating a Tuesday morning crash in Butte County they say could have been much worse.
A Ford Explorer was towing a boat on Highway 99 near Nelson-Shippee Road just before 11 a.m. when the driver drifted across the center divider and hit a silver Mitsubishi head-on. The boat came off the trailer and ended up 100 yards away.
CHP officials say speeding was not a factor, but the cause of the crash remains under investigation. Traffic was backed up for nearly an hour, but both lanes of Highway 99 reopened just before noon.
The driver of the Mitsubishi was taken to the hospital with moderate injuries, everyone else was able to walk away uninjured.
