SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - An official says San Francisco sheriff's deputies forced jail inmates to fight each other, gambling on the bouts and telling them to lie if they got hurt.
Public Defender Jeff Adachi tells The San Francisco Chronicle (http://bit.ly/1xF2S9I ) that at least four deputies over the last few weeks threatened inmates at County Jail No. 4 with violence or refused them food if they didn't fight.
Adachi says the deputies sought the battles for entertainment. The four are on paid leave.
Adachi says the ringleader was Deputy Scott Neu, who was accused in 2006 of forcing inmates to perform sexual acts on him. The case was settled out of court.
Harry Stern, an attorney for the San Francisco Deputy Sheriff's Association, the deputies' union, called the allegations "exaggerated" and the fighting "little more than horseplay."
