COMPTON, Calif. (AP) - A Los Angeles County sheriff's official says a bullet that killed a 1-year-old girl in her crib at a Compton, California, home was likely meant for her gang-member father.
Lt. John Corina says the child was killed when a gunman got out of a car and fired at least five rounds Tuesday evening at a converted garage where the family live.
A bullet hit the child in the head. Deputies rushed her in their patrol car to a hospital where she was declared dead.
Authorities say the gunman sped away in a dark sedan driven by another man.
Corina tells The Associated Press that the girl's 24-year-old father has acknowledged being a member of a street gang. Corina says he is being somewhat cooperative with detectives.
Compton Mayor Aja Brown identified the child as 1-year-old Autumn Johnson. The mayor says the city must take a renewed stand against gang violence.
