FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Police say two officers shot and killed a man to stop him from stabbing a woman in a Central California motel room attack.

Fresno Police Chief Jerry Dyer told KFSN-TV on Wednesday that an officer first tried to stop the man by firing beanbags at him, before officers fired bullets.

Dyer says one officer shouted that the man was still stabbing her as he fired.

Dyer says guests of the motel heard the woman screaming and called police.

The chief says officers' body cameras recorded the bloody attack.

Police say the 55-year-old woman was stabbed 13 times.

He says the officers' quick response saved the woman's life.

Police did not immediately identify the suspect, who has a long criminal past.

He was pronounced dead at an area hospital.
