A Yuba City Police officer involved in a fatal shooting in Sutter County has been cleared of any wrong doing.
Sutter County Assistant District Attorney Jana McClung made the announcement today. Stanley Thompson was shot by Yuba City Police Officer David Santanna in March. McClung said the officer's action was legally justified and in defense of others and self defense pursuant to Penal Code section 197. No criminal charges will be filed against Officer Santanna.
The investigation was conducted by the District Attorney's Office, which is the standard procedure in officer involved shootings.
The shooting happened March 13, 2014. Officers were dispatched to the area of Hillview Drive, Yuba City, in response to a neighbor dispute involving threats. Several officers arrived on scene. Thompson had fired several shots at officers and numerous neighbors sustained bullet strikes to their homes and vehicles from the weapons fired by Thompson. He was shot after refusing to drop his rifle and aiming the rifle at responding officers.
