Authorities in Salinas say an officer was hit in the head with a bottle when a demonstration against recent police shootings turned violent.
A Salinas Police officer was responding to a shooting around 9 p.m. Wednesday and was attempting to perform CPR on the victim when he was hit. The man, identified as 23-year-old Constantino Garcia, died later that night. Garcia had recently moved to Salinas with his wife and child.
The shooting occurred near the site of a protest against three officer-involved shootings this year. The crowd apparently turned on police and began throwing bricks, rocks and other objects. Several police vehicles were damaged.
Police estimate there were approximately 100 people in the area who presumably witnesses the shooting, but at this time, no witnesses have come forward with information.
The injured officer is expected to be OK.
