WASHINGTON (AP) - President Barack Obama wants to spend $1 billion to help curb illegal immigration from Central America.

The proposal is part of the president's $4 trillion budget request submitted to Congress Monday.

The president's request says the money would be used to help address the causes of illegal immigration from Central America and would focus on helping Honduras, El Salvador and Guatemala improve border security, economic and social development and make improvements to law enforcement and judicial systems in those countries.

The administration first proposed financial aid to the three countries last year after more than 51,000 Central American children were caught crossing the border alone. Obama described the situation last spring and summer as a humanitarian crisis.
