Obama's free community college proposal did receive a warm welcome from Pleasant Valley High School and Butte Community College.
A counselor at Pleasant Valley High School says she was pleased to see a new take on career and college readiness.
She says 50% of PV graduating seniors chose community college last year.
While she argues community college is already affordable and accessible here in California, this could only help send more of the less motivated students on to community college, and maybe even some of the highly motivated students.
"Any student that's thinking about the cost of a four year education or beyond four years would look at that and see the value," Amanda Ellis said. "It's really a valuable opportunity."
A Butte College official tells Action News Now the school has increased degrees by 30% over the last five years.
He says Obama's proposal is "potentially transformative."
