North State real estate scam on the rise

North State real estate experts say the local housing market is on the rebound.

And while that may be good news for the economy there are criminals looking to cash in by posing as landlords.

This is a scam where criminals go online, target renters and try to steal their money. And this is how it works: criminals copy property information listed online for sale, say they're for rent and offer a deal too good to be true.

The cyber criminals then ask for a cash deposit, take the money and leave without a trail. And the would-be renters are left without a house--and without their money.

And this type of crime has seen a huge increase here in the north state.

“Coldwell Banker was contacted by the (Butte County) DA offices because it’s happened to three of our properties in like a week,” said Kim Jergentz, Coldwell Banker Dufour Realty general manager.
