"It is the best movie I've seen all year!" And 28-year-old Jake McLaughlin of Paradise, can proudly say he's apart of it.. "When I saw myself on the screen I was like.. Oh yah I'm in this.. Oh I forgot I was in this.. God I hope I do a good job."
Warrior, staring Tom Hardy, Nick Nolte and Joel Edgerton, is about two brothers, fighting against each other in a mixed martial arts tournament. McLaughlin plays a military character, sheding light on why Hardy's character ex-marine Tommy.. is fighting in the film. Something McLaughlin has real-life experience with. "Being a vet. I have a good understanding of what's real and what isn't real," McLaughlin says.
McLaughlin was born and raised in the Paradise/Chico area.. And served four years in the Army.. Including a tour in Iraq.. When he got back to Chico in 2005, he began doing ranch and concrete work to support his wife and two children. That's when he received a phone call, asking him to audition for the film 'In the Valley of Elah', because of his real-life military experience. "I found out three days later I got the part.. So I was kind of thrown into it, never having done it before."
An avid movie lover his whole life, McLaughlin never dreamed he would be apart of them one day. He says, "I lucked out. That's basically all it is, I lucked out and I'm aware of that everyday."
Since that movie in 2007, he has taken acting classes, which have paid off.. He has worked on sets like, 'Super 8', 'The Day the Earth Stood Still', and 'Grey's Anatomy'. He is currently staring in the T.V. series 'Crash', and just finished working on the movies 'Safe House' and 'Savages'.. Along-side actors Denzel Washington and John Travolta.
McLaughlin is on his way to Hollywood stardom, but says he will always call the north state home. "I want to raise my children up here. I was raised up here.. It's a great place to live, it's a great place to raise your kids.. All around I can't think of a better place to do it."
