SAN FRANCISCO (AP) - An association of reporters and editors is backing a lawsuit over civil court records in Ventura County, saying the First Amendment gives reporters the right to access civil complaints as soon as they are filed.

In a brief filed with the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Friday, The Reporters Committee For Freedom of the Press says prompt access to court documents would promote more accurate reporting and informed discussion.

The brief was in support of Courthouse News Service, which is suing Ventura County Superior Court Clerk Michael Planet for the court's failure to make some complaints available on the same day they are filed. Ventura County courts say they must confirm the integrity of a civil complaint and have other tasks that may take priority.
