The Chico Fire Department is seeing new firefighters join the ranks. Today, we got to see a few of them in action.
Three of the department's newest firefighters took part in "commercial vent training" at the Chico Airport. The training helps ready firefighters to navigate commercial structure fires. This group is in their 5th week of training. After 8 weeks they'll hit the floor with the rest of the department.
Thanks to a new $5.3 million grant from the federal government, 15 positions will be paid for. The increase in staff will help reduce response time and decrease property loss due to fire.
The grant is the largest of its kind awarded to any city in the State of California and the 8th largest in the country behind cities like Miami and Detroit.
