UNDATED (AP) - New Year's celebrations also brought tragedy.

Thirty-six people were killed in a stampede during China's New Year's celebrations in downtown Shanghai.

People unable to contact friends and relatives have been streaming into hospitals, where dozens of injured people are being treated.

At one hospital, police brought out photos of the unidentified dead. Some people who looked at the photos broke into tears when they recognized someone.

And in the Philippines, it's believed that firecrackers set off by children started a huge fire in a metropolitan Manila slum today, destroying hundreds of shanties.

The blaze was spread quickly by strong winds. Thousands of poor families have been displaced.
