When it comes to the local walnut industry, there’s a growing theft problem.
“Butte County has a problem with rural crime,” said Butte County Farm Bureau executive director Colleen Cecil. “Dishonest people feel the need to go into orchards and steal walnuts.”
To help farmers fight this costly situation, local law officials recently implemented a new policy.
The Butte County Board of Supervisors amended and ordinance to eliminate roadside cash walnut buyers during harvest time.
“The hope is those people will no longer have an avenue to sell (stolen) walnuts,” Cecil said.
