A new Redding police unit focusing on downtown crime is set to hit the streets early next year.

The Redding Police Department announced the implementation of their new Neighborhood Police Unit Wednesday. The unit will be comprised of one sergeant, one corporal and four officers and is slated to begin work on January 4.

Police said the primary mission of the unit will be to focus on long-term solutions to crime, and the main area of focus will be downtown and the Hilltop Drive business district.

The unit will analyze crime trends in the designated areas and take appropriate enforcement action,” Sgt. Walt Bullington said in a news release Wednesday.
