For many people pets are family, so it's devastating when you family pup turns up missing, but there's now a new app that is helping pet owners find their lost animals.

Finding Rover, a free mobile app, uses facial recognition technology to help families find their missing pets on the spot by simply taking a photo on a mobile device.

All you have to do is take a picture of your pet, then check the shelters that have downloaded their database of animals onto the app. If there's a match, you can contact the shelter.

The app includes a notification system that pings your phone is a dog is lost within a 10-mile radius. Whoever finds a missing dog will be sent contact info to notify the pet owner directly.

The apps creator says they've already helped nearly 500 animals find their way back home.
