A Cottonwood man is in custody after he broke into a garage and was confronted by an attentive neighbor.

Tehama County Sheriffs said Robert Edwards, 43, forced open the door of an unattached garage near the 17000 block of Evergreen Road in Cotton wood and was rummaging through the building.

That’s when the neighbor of the burglarized garage, Peter Chan, confronted the suspect mid-burglary. The suspect attempted to flee the scene in what witness said was a white, convertible Volkswagen.

Deputies who responded to the scene located a vehicle matching the description nearby at Evergreen Middle School. They contacted the suspect who was positively identified as the same person who burglarized the garage. The suspect then confessed to the break-in.

Edwards is being held at the Tehama County Jail on $100,000 bond for charges of burglary.
