Natural Gas Pipeline Explodes Overnight In Missouri

Black Friday shoppers in West Central Missouri were surprised to see the sky lit up by a gas pipeline explosion.

Those living nearby, who weren't out and about, were awakened by a loud bang and a tremor in the ground.

A pipeline owned by Panhandle Eastern Pipeline Company exploded in Sedalia just after midnight Friday.

The company said a 30-inch natural gas pipeline near a compressor station ruptured, causing the explosion.

No one was injured or killed in the incident.

Crews were able to extinguish the fire after a few hours, and Panhandle Eastern is now investigating to determine exactly what happened.

This is the second incident in five years to happen on this pipeline.

A pipeline failure investigation report shows a rupture occurred on this line in roughly the same location back in 2008.

No one was injured in that incident.
