Chico Mayor Scott Gruendl will issue a resolution recognizing at the city council meeting tonight proclaiming October 24th as Food Day in Chico. The Butte County Board of Supervisors passed a similar resolution on October 7th.
Food Day will be celebrated between 2-6pm at the Chapmantown Farmers' Market, 1010 Cleveland Avenue, Chico and at the African-American Family & Cultural Center Community Garden, 2733 Wyandotte Avenue, Oroville.
The events will offer kids and adults the opportunity to learn about and taste locally-grown, organic food. A pumpkin-smash and seed collecting contest, apple eating contest, games, performances and more will focus on the importance of eating healthy. Pumpkin decorating will be available for kids, and at the Chico event, local chefs will offer cooking demonstrations.
This effort is partially funded by a 2012 Specialty Crop Block grant from the California Department of Food and Agriculture.
