Mylar balloon sparks 75 acre blaze in Butte County

A metallic balloon was the cause of a 75-acre vegetation fire near Bangor Wednesday, according to Cal Fire Butte County.

Fire investigators say the fire started just after 1 p.m. Wednesday when a Mylar balloon came into contact with a power line, causing burning materials to fall on dry vegetation.

The blaze was spotted by a fire crew returning from a smaller fire on La Porte Road. Investigators say the first fire was also caused by a Mylar balloon.

When disposing of a balloon, make sure to puncture it in several places and if one does become entangled in an overhead power line do not attempt to retrieve it, call 9-1-1.
