A Shasta County man long suspected of being involved in the 2013 death of a Lake Shasta man was arrested and charged with murder Thursday when his girlfriend was released from jail.

Johnny Paul Bass, 52, of Redding was arrested in connection with the November 2013 death of 48-year-old Milton Roy Sherwood, who died after being dropped at Mercy Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the chest.

Bass was originally arrested in connection with Sherwood's death in 2013, but he was released following a preliminary hearing in which the judge cited a lack of evidence directly linking Bass to the shooting.

Despite Bass' release, sheriff's investigators continued their work on the case and were able to issue an arrest warrant on Christmas Eve.

Sheriff's deputies were able to track Bass through his girlfriend, Rebecca Wood, who was arrested on Tuesday for allegedly cashing fraudulent checks at several Redding businesses.

When Wood was released from Jail this afternoon deputies tracked her movements in an effort to nab Bass. Deputies followed after Wood was picked up from an apartment complex and taken to a warehouse on Caterpillar Road. It was at the warehouse they spotted Bass and were able to take him into custody. He has been booked into the Shasta County Jail.
