A Redding woman has been charged with murder in connection with the death of her 90-year-old mother, and the victim's granddaughter is facing an elder abuse charge.
The Shasta County District Attorney's Office filed a murder charge Tuesday against Kathryn Jean Havens, alleging Haven's treatment of her mother Dorothy Havens caused the woman's death.
Redding police were called to a home on Tidmore Lane last Thursday night and when they arrived they were told 90-year-old Dorothy Havens had been transported to Mercy Medical Center with breathing problems. First responders told investigators they suspected neglect was a factor in Haven's medical condition.
Dorothy Havens died at the hospital the next morning.
Investigators learned Dorothy Havens had been bedridden since November 2014, and when medics arrived last Thursday she was covered in feces and had open wounds with fly larva in them.
Dorothy Havens' caretakers were reportedly Kathryn and Kathryn's daughter Amanda Havens, who has been charged with elder abuse. The District Attorney's Office is still reviewing Amanda's case and additional charges could be filed.
Kathryn Havens appeared in a Shasta County courtroom Tuesday and entered a not guilty plea, she is being held on $1 million bail. Amanda Havens has not been arraigned, and has yet to be appointed a public defender.
