The murder charge against a Redding man accused in the 2013 death of a Lake Shasta man has been dropped for the second time.

Johnny Paul Bass, 52, was arrested earlier this month in connection with the November 2013 death of 48-year-old Milton Roy Sherwood, who died after being dropped at Mercy Medical Center with a gunshot wound to the chest.

A Judge said the decision to dismiss the murder charge was made because there was sufficient evidence to prove that Bass acted in self-defense.

This is the second time charges against Bass have been dropped in connection to Sherwood's death. He was originally arrested and charged for Sherwood's death in 2013, but he was released following a preliminary hearing in which the judge cited a lack of evidence directly linking Bass to the shooting.

Bass will still be held to answer for several drug charges that were filed after investigators served a search warrant at his home while investigating Sherwood's death.
