Cal Fire Butte County Fire crews responded to multiple fires in the Palermo area on Saturday night. At least two appear suspicious.
The first response was to a small vegetation reported at Upper Palermo Road and Bohemia Avenue at 9:04 p.m.
The second fire was reported as a vegetation fire in the area of Melvina Avenue and Kenilworth Avenue and was reported at 11:34 p.m. While the crews were working to extinguish this small blaze, passerby’s reported to the engine crews that there was a fire behind the Christian Faith Center at 7695 Melvina Avenue. The crews responding found a fire burning at the exterior of the building near the fellowship hall. The quick response and call for additional resources allowed crews to contain the fire before it spread into the attic. Damage was held to $3,000.00 to the structure, while saving the remaining building and contents, valued at $950,000.00. Sunday morning services at the church were cancelled due to the smell of smoke in the buildings.
While the cause of the first fire does not appear to be suspicious, the cause of the following two fires remains under investigation and are considered suspicious. In the Paradise area, crews responded to a residential structure fire at 1537 Rosemary Court at 2 a.m. on Sunday. The first engine at scene found the carport, garage, attic and attached room in back of the garage fully involved. There was a small spread of fire to the nearby vegetation, but the crews were able to quickly contain the blaze and confine the damage to the garage, room and attic areas. The damage is listed at $150,000.00, with a save of $200,000.00 to the remaining structure and contents. The cause of this fire remains under investigation and is not considered suspicious.
