A school official at Parkview Elementary School in Chico said Monday that what is believed to be a mountain lion was spotted on campus Friday night.

According to the school, a janitor saw the mountain lion around 10 p.m. Friday and a second janitor reported finding mountain lion scat on the campus this morning.

School Officials sent a note to all of the staff Monday morning informing them about the situation, and have a recorded message going out to all of the families of students this afternoon.

The automated message is as a follows:

"Good afternoon Parkview Families,

We received information today that this past Friday, September 5th at approximately 10:00 p.m. at night, there was a possible mountain lion citing in the park and possibly near or on Parkview's play field. Parkview has notified both city and park authorities and they are investigating. In the meantime, we have asked Parkview staff to be extra-vigilant when students are on the play field. We do not want to unnecessarily alarm anyone, but we do encourage parents and community members to be aware of their surroundings while walking in or near the park.

We will keep our community updated as we learn more from city and park staff. "
