CASTRO VALLEY, Calif. (AP) - Authorities say a motorcyclist who died in a crash in Northern California while being pursued by officers participated earlier in illegal street stunts with other vehicles.
The California Highway Patrol says officers saw the motorcyclist speeding in Oakland on Sunday night and briefly pursued him before stopping due to safety concerns.
CHP Officer Eric Thomas says the motorcyclist reached speeds up to 100 miles-per-hour as he headed toward Castro Valley, where he fatally collided with an SUV moments after exiting Interstate 580.
The motorcyclist's name has not been released.
CHP Officer Sean Wilkenfeld says investigators determined Monday that the motorcyclist was involved in two sideshows in Oakland earlier Sunday.
Wilkenfeld says about 100 vehicles performed stunts on I-580 before police intervened.
The vehicles reconvened at the Port of Oakland, but then sped off onto nearby freeways as police stepped in.
