The mother of three kids abducted from San Pablo was arrested on Tueday in connection with the shooting death of the childrens' father, police said.

At a morning news conference, San Pablo police said 35-year-old Alicia Ortez was arrested in connection with the homicide of the childrens' father, who has not yet been identified. He was found shot on Monday just before 8 a.m. in the backyard of a home in the 1600 block of 16th Street.

Police described the man as Ortez's "male companion."

After the man was found dead, the children - ages 12, 6 and 3 - were nowhere to be found.

The California Highway Patrol issued an Amber Alert for the couple's children, ages 12, 6 and 3 on Monday. But shortly after midnight, the CHP canceled the alert, saying the children were safe with their mother.

Police on Monday said they suspected Ortez, who is the non-custodial, biological mother of the kids, as a suspect in her childrens' abduction.
