Mill manager sentenced for polluting federal property

A Biggs man and former mill manager has been sentenced to prison for polluting federal property in Shasta County.

In October Kiedock Kim admitted to depredation of U.S. property and negligent discharge of a pollutant into U.S. water between 2006 and 2007. He was sentenced Thursday to six months in prison and ordered to pay $107,160 in restitution.

During Kiedock's time as mill manager the French Gulch Mine in Shasta County generated more liquid wastes than its treatment system could handle.

The U.S. Attorney's office says mill employees often dumped the excess waste into abandoned mines, an improvised leach field, a waste rock area, or on the county road surrounding the mine. Several of those spots are on Bureau of Land Management property.
