A grass fire north of Chico spread to 475 acres within a few hours' time, according to CalFire. Thanks to high winds, the Meridian Fire also jumped Highway 99 at Wookey Lane, say investigators. They say fire prevention officers are headed to the scene to find out how Saturday night's blaze started. The CHP was on scene conducting traffic control on Highway 99, as firefighters worked to protect property. At last check, the blaze was 50% contained, and was not threatening any structures.
