The trial of Jeffery Menzies continued today after opening statements were made in the murder trial yesterday. Menzies is charged with fatally shooting 26-year-old David Yang near the intersection of Hwy 32 and Bruce Road in Chico in September 2011.
This morning’s testimony centered on Menzies’ friend, David Slack. Today prosecutors played phone conversations between Menzies and Slack recorded by the police hours after the shooting. During the phone conversation, Menzies reportedly suggested where Slack should hide the rifle. Menzies also told Slack in during the conversation he was drunk and that he “messed up”.
Jodea Foster, Menzies’ defense attorney, stated in court yesterday this case is simply one of two men attempting a robbery gone wrong. Foster claimed both Menzies and Slack were out to try to find someone to rob in order to get money out of a victim’s ATM. The defense claims Menzies and Slack were approaching Ying’s car when “a shot rang out” and the two men scattered in different directions.
