"Till death do us part" is a phrase that is taken lightly in today's society, with the national divorce rate hovering around 50%. But a couple from McCloud is the exception. This week, they were honored as the longest married couple in California.
It's a truly remarkable story, Scott and Thelma Dowell were married in 1934 and have been by each other’s side ever since.
It was back in Livingston County, Missouri when Scott Dowell and Thelma Gann first met.
“We owned our place and they were renters… She came down there one day and I met her.
After years of courtship, the couple tied the knot on March 6th, 1934, Thelma’s birthday.
“I was 19 the day we were married... he was 19 in November before,” said Thelma.
“Oh I don't know, we had just made up our mind to get married. So we went up to town and got our license to get married,” said Scott.
Since then, they have been through everything together, The Great Depression, a world war, and 78 years of happy memories.
“We just don’t fight, you know, that’s what gets people in trouble, they get into arguments and just keep arguing and fall out and we have never done that,” said Scott.
The two came to northern California in 1937 where Scott worked for the McCloud River Logging Company.
“They closed that camp out there and we all moved into McCloud and we bought our house and we have been here ever since,” said Scott.
Scott 98, and Thelma 97, have outlived two of their children and one grandchild. But they are still left with one child, four grandchildren, 12 great grand children, and 11 great great grand children.
“Well it’s been pleasant... because I think everything has been just about as perfect as can be,” said Scott.
The couple says being named the longest married in California this week, is the icing in the cake.
“Feels great, I did not think it would ever happen,” said Scott.
The marriage ranking was presented to Scott and Thelma by an organization called "World Wide Marriage Encounter."
A couple from Connecticut who have been married for 80 years was ranked as the longest in the nation.
