Maryville police arrested a 62-year-old man Monday who allegedly tried to break into the historical Mary Aaron Museum.

Police were called to the museum on D Street Monday when a man reported seeing somebody kick open the fence surrounding the museum and then violently kick the front door.

When officers arrived they found the suspect, later identified as Dean Arthur Avey of Marysville, walking away from the museum. After the witness positively identified Avey as the suspect, police took the 62-year-old into custody.

Police found that Avey had been unsuccessful in stealing anything from the museum, but he had caused $2,000 to $5,000 worth of damage to the front door. Avey was booked into the Yuba County Jail where he is being held on $25,000 bail.
