Chico mayor Mary Goloff began Tuesday night’s city council meeting by announcing she is stepping down immediately. Goloff’s announcement came without warning to the stunned standing-room-only crowd attending the meeting at the Chico City Council Chambers. Goloff will keep her seat on the Chico City Council. She offered few details about her decision, saying only that she was resigning for health reasons. City council members immediately elected a new mayor and vice mayor. Councilman Scott Gruendl was elected as mayor in a 6 to 1 vote, with Sean Morgan opposing. Gruendl held the position of mayor previously. Mark Sorensen was selected to be vice mayor in a 5 to 2 vote with Ann Schwab and Tami Ritter opposing.
