Marine who died in training hike was from Yuba City

A United States Marine who died during a training exercise last week was from Yuba City.

Marine Corps officials say Cpl. Alexis Alcaraz lost consciousness and collapsed Thursday morning during a conditioning hike at the Camp Lejeune base in North Carolina.

Alcaraz, who joined Marine Corps in 2012, was assigned to 1st Battlion, 8th Marines and was working as a field radio operator. He was never deployed and was previously stationed at Camp Pendleton and Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center Twentynine Palms in California, and Okinawa, Japan.

Officials said Camp Lejeune is conducting an investigation into Alcaraz's death.
