The California Secretary of State announced Wednesday that proponents of a new ballot initiative to legalize marijuana can begin collecting signatures.
The measure would legalize marijuana possession and sales, as well as create marijuana tax at the state and local levels. The measure would also create a commission to license and regulate the marijuana industry.
Additionally, the measure would establish procedures for re-sentencing people who have been convicted of non-violent marijuana offenses.
Supporters have until March 7, 2016 to collect the nearly 366,000 signatures needed to qualify the measure for the November 2016 ballot.
